Pikillacta holds an important place in the region’s pre-Columbian history, predating the rise of the Inca Empire.
Finally, we will head to Andahuaylillas, where we will visit the famous Andahuaylillas Church. Known as the «Sistine Chapel of America,» this 16th century church features stunning murals and intricate designs. Located in the province of Quispicanchi, at an altitude of 3,122 meters (10,242 feet), Andahuaylillas offers a glimpse into colonial-era religious art. Our one-day tour through the South Valley of Cusco offers a unique journey into Peru’s rich history. This five-hour experience will take us through ancient Inca and Pre-Inca wonders, including Tipon, Pikillacta, and Andahuaylillas. We will begin our day at 8:00 a.m., when our private transport picks us up from the hotel. We will travel southwest for 40 minutes, covering approximately 27 kilometers (17 miles) to reach Tipon. During the drive, we will take in the beautiful landscapes of the South Valley of Cusco.
At Tipon, we will explore agricultural terraces, advanced irrigation systems, and impressive Inca architecture. Located 3,500 meters (11,482 feet) above sea level, Tipon is part of the Qhapaq Ñan, the ancient Inca road network. We’ll spend time understanding how the Incas managed agriculture and water in such an efficient manner.
After Tipon, we will continue our journey to Pikillacta, about 30 minutes away, covering another 22 kilometers (13.7 miles). Pikillacta stands 3,250 meters (10,663 feet) above sea level. We will explore one of the best-preserved pre-Inca cities in Peru.
This Wari civilization site offers impressive adobe structures and a fascinating look at their advanced urban planning. We will walk through the remnants of this ancient city and imagine life before the Inca Empire.
Our final stop will be Andahuaylillas, a short 10-minute drive away, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Pikillacta. We will visit the 16th-century Andahuaylillas Church, often called the «Sistine Chapel of America.» This remarkable church, located at 3,122 meters (10,242 feet) above sea level, features intricate frescoes and stunning religious art. We will admire its magnificent interior, with its vivid murals and colonial-era artwork.
By 1:00 p.m., we will return to Cusco, concluding our tour. We will reflect on the incredible blend of history, culture, and natural beauty we’ve experienced in the South Valley of Cusco.
The tour lasts approximately 5 hours, including travel time and time spent exploring each site.
The tour is considered easy to moderate. Most of the sites involve light walking on uneven terrain, but nothing strenuous.
The dry season (May to October) is the best time to visit. However, the tour operates year-round, including during the wet season (November to April).
