The Rainbow Mountain hike requires moderate to challenging physical effort due to high altitude and changing terrain. We will traverse different hiking levels from 1 to 4 during the tour:
The hike is moderate to challenging, especially due to the high altitude. The trail involves a mix of flat terrain and steep, rugged sections. You should be in good physical shape and have acclimatized to the altitude before attempting the hike.
The summit of Rainbow Mountain stands at 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level. Altitude acclimatization is strongly recommendable before the hike to avoid altitude sickness.
The hike typically takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes each way, depending on your pace and fitness level. Some hikers may take longer due to the effects of the altitude.
Yes, horses are available for rent at the trailhead. This can be a good option for those who find the high altitude or steep terrain challenging. However, the final section of the hike still requires walking due to the terrain.
Wear layered clothing that can easily be adjusted as temperatures fluctuate. Bring warm clothing, including a hat and gloves, as well as waterproof gear like a poncho or rain jacket in case of rain. Sturdy, comfortable trekking shoes are essential for the rugged terrain.
Our guides are trained to assist with altitude sickness.
The tour includes a traditional Andean breakfast and lunch served in Cusipata. Both meals will help you stay energized throughout the day, but we also recommend bringing snacks for the hike.
The tour is best suited for individuals who are in good physical condition. Children and elderly participants can join the tour if they feel comfortable with hiking at high altitudes and over steep terrain. For those less able to hike, horse rentals are available to assist with the majority of the ascent.
The best time to visit Rainbow Mountain is during the dry season, from May to September. The weather is more stable, and the skies are clearer, providing better visibility of the colorful landscape. The rainy season (October to April) can make the trail muddy and slippery.
To prepare for the high altitude, spend at least 2-3 days in Cusco before the hike to acclimatize. During this period, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, eat light meals, and rest. You may also want to consult your doctor about taking medication to prevent altitude sickness, such as acetazolamide.
In addition to the required trekking gear, bring sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, a camera, and extra water. Don’t forget some cash for tips, snacks, or if you choose to rent a horse during the hike.
Cell phone service is generally limited or unavailable during most of the hike. We recommend informing loved ones of your plans before starting the tour.
Yes, we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude activities and medical evacuation, should any emergency arise during the tour.
You can book the Rainbow Mountain Peru Tour through our website or by contacting our office directly. We recommend booking in advance, especially during the peak season, as tours tend to fill up quickly.
